The Chobe River is one of the great wildlife rivers of Africa. Three hours on the water in the afternoon – when the heat drives animals to the river in extraordinary numbers – delivers close encounters that no land vehicle can replicate. This is the shared boat option: an open-sided safari boat with an experienced guide, departing in the afternoon, returning at sunset. The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of Chobe National Park, and in the dry season it becomes the lifeline for every animal in the region. As other water sources disappear, elephants, buffalo, impala, warthog, and lion all converge on this single reliable water source. The afternoon is the peak activity window. From the water, you experience things invisible from the road: Elephants swimming – Entire herds wade into the river and swim midstream. Seeing this from a boat at water level is genuinely unlike anything else. Hippos at eye level – From a boat, you’re at the same level as their eyes, nostrils, and ears as they surface. A pod of 30 hippos surfacing 10 metres from the boat is one of the great sensory experiences of African wildlife. Crocodile behaviour – Nile crocodiles are visible on every sandbank along the Chobe River. Birdlife – African Fish Eagles, Malachite Kingfishers, Giant Kingfishers, Grey Herons, Goliath Herons, Saddle-billed Storks, Carmine Bee-eaters, and dozens of other species are active throughout the afternoon.

Will I get seasick? Very unlikely. The Chobe River cruise operates on a wide, slow-moving river – not open sea. The boats are purpose-built and stable. Seasickness has been extremely rare in years of operation. Is the boat covered/shaded? Most Chobe safari boats have an upper deck (open, full sun) and a lower covered deck. We recommend the upper deck for the best sightings and photography. How close do you get to the animals? Close. Very close. The boat’s engine is cut when approaching wildlife, and the craft drifts silently to within 20–40 metres of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles.

The afternoon cruise is better for elephant and hippo activity – as the heat peaks, animals converge on the river in the greatest numbers. The afternoon golden light is also significantly better for photography. For most visitors, the afternoon is the recommended option.
